Working from a subtitle file, explained

What is a subtitle file summary?

A subtitle file summary is produced from an existing SRT, VTT or plain-text transcript rather than from the video itself. Since the words are already written down, no speech recognition step is needed — the language model reads the file directly and condenses it, which makes the process faster and removes transcription error entirely.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both are plain-text subtitle formats with timestamped lines. SRT is the older and more widely supported one, using comma-separated milliseconds. WebVTT was designed for the web and allows styling and positioning metadata alongside the text. For summarizing, the difference is irrelevant — both parse to the same words.

Why summarize a transcript instead of the video?

A transcript already contains everything a summary needs, and reading text is far faster than processing audio. Starting from a subtitle file also removes the largest source of error: if the words are already correct, the summary cannot inherit a mis-heard name or number from the transcription step.
